The Kenyan Government has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing media freedom and sustainability, as articulated by Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, Hon. William Kabogo.
During a meeting with key stakeholders in the media industry, including the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK), Hon. Kabogo emphasized the importance of creating a conducive environment for media operations. In his address, he acknowledged the significant challenges faced by the media sector and pledged to prioritize their resolution. He stated, “Our focus is on creating a sustainable and fair operating environment,” highlighting the need for collaborative efforts among various stakeholders to foster a vibrant media landscape.
The meeting also served as a platform for reaffirming a seven-point agenda established with former Cabinet Secretary Dr. Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u. This agenda addresses critical issues such as the settlement of outstanding media debts, formulation of a transparent government advertising policy, and reforms in radio and television frequency allocation. AMWIK Executive Director Queenter Mbori emphasized the organization’s commitment to advocating for gender-sensitive media practices and ensuring women’s voices are amplified within the industry.
In line with these objectives, AMWIK has been actively collaborating with the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) to enhance press freedom and address various challenges affecting journalists.
To facilitate ongoing dialogue on press freedom and sustainability, Hon. Kabogo announced plans for regular media roundtables involving various stakeholders. This initiative aims to maintain momentum in addressing industry challenges while fostering effective public communication.The engagement highlighted the critical role of partnerships in advancing media freedom in Kenya.
