AMWIK Joins CS ICT for the Launch of the 2027 Election Coverage Guidelines & MCK Strategic Plan 2026–2030

In a landmark event aimed at bolstering ethical reporting, safety for journalists, and democratic transparency across Kenya, the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) joined the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications, and Digital Economy, William Kabogo, alongside key sector stakeholders in Nakuru County for a historic double launch.

The ceremony marked the official unveiling of the Guidelines for Election Coverage 2027 alongside the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) Strategic Plan 2026–2030. Together, these frameworks set a progressive roadmap for media governance, professional integrity, and newsroom safety ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle.

Elections serve as a critical litmus test for a nation’s democracy and media resilience. Speaking during the launch, stakeholders underscored the imperative of providing accurate, non-partisan, and responsible news coverage while ensuring journalists operate free from intimidation, harassment, and political violence.

“Free, fair, and safe elections depend on a vibrant, courageous, and gender-responsive press. As we head toward 2027, protecting women journalists and integrating gender parity in political reporting are fundamental to democratic integrity.”

For AMWIK, the Guidelines for Election Coverage 2027 represent a vital mechanism to advocate for gender-sensitive media coverage. Historical electoral cycles have often shown a disparity in how female political candidates are reported on compared to their male counterparts, alongside heightened online and offline safety risks facing female journalists on the campaign trail.

  • Guidelines for Election Coverage 2027: Establishes ethical benchmarks for fair candidate representation, combating hate speech, fighting misinformation, and safeguarding the physical and digital security of media personnel during elections.
  • MCK Strategic Plan 2026–2030: A comprehensive 5-year blueprint focusing on sustainable media practice, regulatory compliance, journalist capacity building, and institutional resilience across digital and traditional platforms.

AMWIK’s presence at the gathering reinforces our continuous drive to ensure that gender considerations are embedded into high-level media policy decisions. Over the coming years, AMWIK will collaborate with the Media Council of Kenya, newsroom managers, and law enforcement agencies to:

  1. Implement specialized safety protocols: Establishing dedicated support structures for women journalists covering high-risk political environments.
  2. Conduct ethical political reporting training: Equipping reporters with the skills needed to eliminate gender bias and misogynistic framing in political commentary.
  3. Promote equal media access: Encouraging news outlets to accord equal voice and platform to women political leaders across all elective posts.

As Kenya prepares for the 2027 elections, AMWIK reaffirms its partnership with the Ministry of Information, Communications, and Digital Economy, the Media Council of Kenya, and civil society allies. By adhering to robust standards and fostering inclusive newsroom cultures, the Kenyan media sector will continue to serve as a beacon of truth, accountability, and democracy.
