Digital Safety and Security
The Association of Media Women in Kenya advocates for and promotes digital safety and security by partnering with media houses to enhance the safety of women in online spaces, and advocating for laws that encourage women’s interaction online and prosecution of perpetrators of online violence. AMWIK facilitates the training of journalists and produces materials to promote digital safety and security.
The DW Akademie Women@Web Project
We have been able to train more than 300 journalists, human rights defenders and university students on digital safety and security. In addition, we have launched a digital safety and security handbook.
Women@Web East Africa
The Women@Web project is a transformative initiative in East Africa aimed at closing the digital gender gap by empowering women through digital literacy, online safety, and economic opportunities. Implemented in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda, the project focuses on equipping women with the skills to use digital tools and platforms effectively. Key objectives include enhancing digital literacy, promoting online safety, supporting women entrepreneurs, advocating for gender-inclusive policies, and fostering networks for collaboration. Organizations like the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) play a critical role in driving these efforts, particularly in training, advocacy, and mentorship. As part of its contribution, AMWIK launched a digital safety and security handbook and a comic strip on digital safety, providing accessible and engaging resources to help women navigate online risks and protect themselves in the digital space.
AMWIK’s involvement in the Women@Web project includes organizing workshops to build digital skills for women journalists, entrepreneurs, and content creators. The organization also conducts awareness campaigns on the importance of digital inclusion and advocates for policies that support women’s access to technology. Through research, mentorship, and networking initiatives, AMWIK helps women navigate the digital space safely and confidently, enabling them to grow their businesses, amplify their voices, and connect with others in the digital ecosystem. The digital safety handbook and comic strip are particularly impactful tools, offering practical advice and relatable scenarios to educate women on topics such as cyberbullying, privacy protection, and online harassment.
The project has made significant strides in increasing digital literacy among women, boosting online entrepreneurship, and creating safer digital environments. However, challenges such as limited digital infrastructure in rural areas, cultural barriers, and high internet costs remain.
Policy Future Of Work project:
Policy’s Future of Work Project is an innovative initiative that explores the transformative impact of technology, data, and automation on the labor market, particularly in Africa. As a feminist collective of technologists, data scientists, and creatives, Pollicy seeks to understand how emerging trends like artificial intelligence and digital transformation are reshaping employment, skills development, and workplace dynamics. The project focuses on ensuring that these changes are inclusive and equitable, especially for women and marginalized groups who often face systemic barriers in accessing opportunities.
The Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) plays a pivotal role in the Future of Work Project, leveraging its expertise in media, communication, and advocacy to amplify the project’s impact. AMWIK’s involvement is particularly focused on ensuring that women’s voices are heard and their needs are addressed in discussions about the future of work. Through its media platforms, AMWIK raises awareness about the challenges women face in the digital economy, such as limited access to digital skills training and unequal opportunities in tech-driven industries. The organization also collaborates with Policy to advocate for gender-responsive policies that promote equal access to decent work and leadership roles for women. By organizing workshops and training sessions, AMWIK helps women in media and technology build the skills needed to adapt to the evolving demands of the workplace, ensuring they are not left behind in the digital transformation.
Together, Policy and AMWIK are driving meaningful change by combining their unique strengths to address the complexities of the future of work. Policy’s data-driven approach and technological expertise complement AMWIK’s media outreach and advocacy capabilities, creating a powerful partnership that bridges the gap between research and action. Through storytelling, AMWIK documents the lived experiences of women navigating the changing world of work, providing valuable insights that inform policy recommendations and program design. This collaboration not only highlights the challenges women face but also showcases their resilience and potential in shaping a more inclusive digital economy. By working together, Policy and AMWIK are paving the way for a future where technology and innovation empower all individuals, regardless of gender, to thrive in the workplace.
