As Kenya progresses toward the Vision 2030 deadline, critical scrutiny is warranted regarding national achievements and the media’s influence in shaping the narrative of progress. Concurrently, the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda faces a critical five-year countdown.
Recognizing the need for accelerated action and heightened public engagement, the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK), in partnership with the SDGs Kenya Forum, convened a two-day training focused on impactful storytelling for SDG reporting. This initiative underscores the crucial need for urgent translation of policy commitments into tangible national development outcomes.

The training provided media professionals with a substantive platform to assess the evolving media landscape and reinforce their capacity to promote national transparency. AMWIK Executive Director, Queenter Mbori, challenged journalists to effectively bridge the gap between high-level policy formulation and public understanding. She emphasized that quality journalism extends beyond mere information dissemination, serving as a powerful catalyst for transformation and a vital mechanism for accountability.
This perspective was reinforced by Ms. Christine Nguku, Assistant Director for Media Training and Curriculum at the Media Council of Kenya, who stressed the importance of amplifying local voices. She encouraged participants to leverage community-driven narratives, asserting that grassroots reporting provides essential authenticity and momentum to Kenya’s pursuit of the SDGs.
The media’s function is now more critical than ever as the nation enters the final phase of the #RaceTo2030. The sector is uniquely positioned to shape public narratives that illustrate real human impact, meticulously track progress against development indicators, and ensure the SDGs remain central to the national political and public discourse.
The success of the next five years hinges on the swiftness of national action and the depth of multi-stakeholder collaboration. AMWIK remains dedicated to equipping Kenyan journalists with the expertise required not just to report on development, but to actively champion the systemic changes necessary to fully realize the 2030 Agenda.
