Strengthening the Future of the Fourth Estate: AMWIK Empowers Young Women Journalists in Nairobi

The Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) today hosted a dynamic forum for young, upcoming women journalists and communicators in Nairobi. This engagement underscores AMWIK’s commitment to decentralizing its operations and fostering a robust national network of next-generation media professionals, fulfilling key recommendations from the recently launched Status of Women in Media Report 2026.

The forum, which brought together enthusiastic budding communicators, served as both a strategic recruitment drive and an intensive professional development seminar. The attendees had the unique opportunity to engage directly with the AMWIK Board and Secretariat, gaining invaluable industry insights.

During the session, AMWIK Executive Director Queenter Mbori led the young journalists through the findings of the Status of Women in Media Report 2026. She emphasized the critical importance of AMWIK membership and highlighted the numerous growth opportunities available to young women within the association’s network.

The AMWIK leadership team took the stage to mentor the attendees, offering practical advice on how to navigate and thrive in the modern media ecosystem:

  • Robi Koki Ochieng (AMWIK Chairperson) spoke passionately about the media industry’s evolving nature.

“Journalists today need to be versatile. You need to be content creators who are capable of building and owning your own spaces,” she noted. She urged the young professionals to join AMWIK for mentorship, challenge conventional boundaries, and bring fresh, innovative ideas to the table.

  • Elizabeth Limagur (Vice Chairperson) inspired attendees to view leadership from a broader perspective. She highlighted the immense benefits of serving on boards and exploring career paths beyond traditional newsrooms, particularly pointing out emerging media opportunities around election cycles.
  • Joyce Nyaruai (Treasurer) broke down the technical and strategic demands of modern media careers. She advised the journalists to become “360-degree communication professionals” who are skilled in digital media awareness, modern equipment handling, personal branding, and tailoring content for diverse audiences.

This Nairobi forum builds on a successful streak of regional engagements AMWIK has conducted this year across Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Meru, and Kisumu counties. Through these decentralized town halls, AMWIK has expanded its membership and also reinforced its dedication to creating a safer, more equitable media environment for women.

This successful regional rollout serves as a blueprint for AMWIK’s ongoing journey to empower, elevate, and amplify every female voice across the Kenyan media landscape.
