Empowering Money Mindsets: AMWIK Workshop Inspires Leadership and Financial Wellness for Women in Media

Who are you when it comes to money?
This thought-provoking question was at the heart of AMWIK’s Leadership and Business Growth Workshop  hosted in partnership with Trish Moeketsi-Njogu of Tumi Wellness. As part of the African Women Entrepreneurship Cooperative (AWEC) “Pay It Forward” initiative, Trish’s dedication will help train 150 women in financial leadership, directly fueling AWEC’s mission to empower African women entrepreneurs.

The workshop welcomed both students and seasoned professionals, guiding them through the eight money archetypes that define our financial choices and behaviors. Rather than focusing solely on budgets and numbers, the session challenged attendees to reflect on their identity, mindset, and potential for growth. Through open discussions, Trish encouraged every participant, whether an Accumulator, Maverick, Nurturer, or Celebrity, to recognize the importance of their money story.

The Eight Money Archetypes:

  • Accumulator: Practical and security-focused savers—sometimes hesitant to spend on enjoyment.
  • Celebrity: Seek visibility, status-driven in spending—may risk stability.
  • Maverick: Bold, entrepreneurial risk-takers—not always mindful of long-term planning.
  • Romantic: Favor comfort and pleasure—prioritizing beauty and experience above limits.
  • Alchemist: Believe in transformation and abundance—see money as energy for change.
  • Connector: Value relationships—excel in teamwork, but may avoid financial planning.
  • Nurturer: Generous and kind—others’ needs often come first.
  • Ruler: Driven by success and control—build empires but face pressure to sustain power.

This vital conversation is even more relevant today, as the media industry undergoes rapid transition. Many journalists are leaving mainstream outlets to pursue consulting, digital content creation, and independent online ventures. These shifts offer new opportunities, but also bring uncertainties and challenges, from income instability to evolving professional identities.

Recognizing these realities, AMWIK has expanded its commitment to the holistic wellbeing of women in media. Alongside financial education, the organization now prioritizes mental wellness sessions for its members, helping them build resilience and adapt to a rapidly changing media environment. These resources are designed to address emerging career pressures, financial concerns, and support members through both personal and professional change.

At AMWIK, we believe empowered women lead with clarity, integrity, and purpose. By cultivating financial and emotional wellness, we set the stage for sustainable growth and positive impact within the newsroom, the boardroom, and beyond.

Your money story matters. Let’s continue to build a community where every woman can lead, grow, and thrive.
