AMWIK Spotlight: Cynthia Gichiri’s Fearless Pursuit of Truth in Investigative Journalism

AMWIK recently sat down with award-winning investigative journalist and member Cynthia Gichiri, who shared the inspiring story of her 14-year journey in journalism—marked by resilience, groundbreaking exposés, and an unwavering commitment to truth.
From her early days as a reporter to her transition into investigative journalism in 2021 with Africa Uncensored, Gichiri has carved a niche in environmental reporting, earning a reputation for her bold, uncompromising approach. Yet her path has been far from easy. She opened up about the unique challenges she faced as a woman in investigative journalism—navigating threats, intimidation, and systemic barriers—and how she turned these obstacles into stepping stones for impactful storytelling.
A Landmark Investigation: Exposing Corruption in Kenya’s Fertilizer Scandal
Among her most notable achievements is a two-year investigation into a fraudulent fertilizer scheme that crippled Kenyan farmers. Gichiri’s relentless pursuit of the story—despite pushback from powerful figures—uncovered a web of corruption involving suppliers and officials who profited from selling substandard fertilizer, leaving farmers with devastating losses.
Her groundbreaking report not only earned her the 2025 AJEA Investigative Journalist of the Year award but also triggered policy reforms, demonstrating the tangible impact of fearless journalism. She also received a global award for the same story. Cynthia also did another piece titled “Poison PR”, a project that examined how a US-government funded PR firm profiled activists and scientists opposing pesticides across the world, including India which won in the Environment Reporting category at One World Media Awards in June 2025.
Overcoming Risks with Resilience
Gichiri’s work has come at a personal cost—she has faced smear campaigns, threats, and intimidation from those exposed in her investigations. Yet, she remains undeterred, attributing her strength to the unwavering support of her team at Africa Uncensored and the solidarity of her peers.
She also highlighted the transformative role AMWIK has played in her career. “From the moment I joined AMWIK, I found a network of strong, supportive women who encouraged me to push boundaries and amplify my voice in a male-dominated field,” Gichiri reflected. Through mentorship, training, and a powerful professional network, AMWIK helped sharpen her skills and amplify her impact.
The Road Ahead: Bridging Media and Academia
Today, Gichiri continues her mission to hold power to account, working on new investigations while setting her sights on further academic growth. With plans to pursue a PhD, she aims to bridge the gap between journalism and academia, fostering a new generation of investigative reporters.
In her closing remarks, she left aspiring journalists—especially young women—with powerful advice: “Stay true to yourself, believe in your capabilities, and remain consistent. The world needs your voice.”
Congratulations, Cynthia, on your extraordinary achievements!
