Kenya Media Groups Defy Communication Authority’s Live Coverage Ban Amid Protests

The Kenya Media Sector Working Group (KMSWG) has called on broadcasters to defy a directive by the Communication Authority (CA) ordering the suspension of live coverage of ongoing protests, terming the move unconstitutional and a threat to press freedom.

In a strongly worded joint statement, the Kenya Media Sector Working Group (KMSWG) which includes the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) has accused the CA of violating Article 34 of the Constitution, which safeguards media freedom, and disregarding a recent High Court ruling that stripped the regulator of content control powers.

“The CA lacks the mandate to regulate broadcast content—this authority rests with the Media Council of Kenya,” the statement read. “Switching off the media is not a solution to the country’s challenges but an outdated tactic that will only escalate tensions.”

The media groups also condemned the shooting of NTV journalist Ruth Sarmwei with a rubber bullet while covering protests, urging police to respect press freedom and the right to peaceful assembly under Article 37.

Additionally, the KMSWG warned against any attempts to disrupt internet access, citing constitutional rights to freedom of expression (Article 33) and access to information (Article 35).

“We urge all media houses to ignore this unlawful directive and continue serving the public without fear,” the statement concluded.
