Kenya Shortlisted to Host the 2026 Africa Media Convention
Kenya has been shortlisted as one of the finalists to host the 2026 Africa Media Convention, a recognition that underscores the country’s growing leadership in advocating for media freedom and the safety of journalists across the continent.
The Africa Media Convention is a flagship event that brings together media professionals, policymakers, academics, and civil society from across Africa to discuss key issues affecting journalism and media development. Hosting this convention would not only enhance Kenya’s profile but also create a platform to amplify critical conversations around press freedom, digital innovation, gender representation, and ethical journalism.
The announcement was made during the 2024 edition of the convention held in Accra, Ghana, which gathered delegates from over 40 countries. Kenya’s bid is supported by a robust media ecosystem, including dynamic organizations like AMWIK, which continue to champion gender equality, media freedom, and the empowerment of women in journalism.
The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) hosted a planning meeting with leaders from key media associations, Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ), Kenya Editors Guild (KEG), and the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) as well as representatives from the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC). The CEO of the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), David Omwoyo reaffirmed the government’s robust support for the bid and stressed the importance of coordinated efforts between media and government to strengthen Kenya’s prospects.

If selected, Kenya will serve as a central stage for meaningful dialogue and collaboration on the future of media in Africa. AMWIK celebrates this milestone and remains committed to fostering a media landscape that is inclusive, safe, and progressive.
