In the heart of Eastern and Southern Africa, where the sun sets the sky ablaze and the rhythms of life beat with vibrant energy, a transformative gathering of minds unfolded. Against the backdrop of breathtaking landscapes, the “Promising Futures” event, hosted by 2gether 4 SRHR and Journalists for Human Rights, emerged as a beacon of hope amid the region’s formidable challenges of adolescent pregnancy, HIV, and gender-based violence (GBV).
Amidst passionate discussions and fervent advocacy, one resounding theme echoed through the halls: the imperative of youth inclusion in decision-making rooms. Recognizing the untapped potential and invaluable perspectives of young people, participants emphasised the vital importance of empowering youth to take an active role in shaping policies and programs that directly affected their lives. With a collective commitment to fostering meaningful youth participation, the event underscored the transformative power of amplifying youth voices in driving positive change across the region.
As the event unfolded, passionate voices filled the room, each echoing a commitment to empower the youth and drive positive change. Among the speakers was Jerop Limo, a young leader whose journey with HIV inspired many. Jerop shared her experiences and emphasised the importance of providing accurate information and support to empower fellow youth facing similar challenges.
However, the event also highlighted the pivotal role of media in reaching wider audiences and driving social change. Advocates like Purity Gikunda, the founding director at Greenland Girls School, emphasised the need for more journalists to cover stories like hers. Purity’s dedication to providing a second chance to teenage mothers through education has not only changed individual lives but has also raised awareness about the importance of supporting marginalised communities. Thanks to media coverage, Purity’s school received vital support from donors and attracted more girls seeking education and empowerment.
Another focal point of the event was the role of journalism in shaping public discourse and challenging societal norms. Participants emphasised the need for media outlets to prioritise accurate and sensitive coverage, ensuring that their reporting reaches a wide audience and contributes to positive social change.
Amidst the discussions, education emerged as a powerful catalyst for change. By keeping girls in school and providing comprehensive sexuality education, communities can equip young people with the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. The room buzzed with ideas and initiatives aimed at harnessing the transformative power of education.
With a shared commitment to empowerment, education, and the power of the media, the “Promising Futures” event concluded with a sense of hope and determination. Participants departed with renewed energy and a collective resolve to work towards a brighter future for the youth of Eastern and Southern Africa.
