A Field of Dreams: La Liga’s Tale of Empowerment for Girls in Kibera

La Liga kicks off scholarships for Kenyan girls in Kibera’s new football initiative

Kick aside the trophies and forget the roar of the crowd. La Liga’s newest play is not happening on a manicured pitch, but in the heart of Kibera slums. Here, they’re aiming to score a different kind of victory: empowering girls through scholarships and football training. This project, titled “La Ligue D’Egalite – Kenya,” is set to rewrite the rules for hundreds of girls, offering them a chance to rise above their circumstances and reach their full potential.

Launched under the banner of “La Ligue D’ Egalite – Kenya,” this initiative signifies La Liga’s commitment to fostering positive change through sport. The project was unveiled at the ParkInn Hotel in Nairobi, marking a pivotal moment in La Liga’s mission to make a difference in communities worldwide.

For 22 girls in Kibera, that dream became reality thanks to La Liga’s “La Ligue D’ Egalite – Kenya” initiative. These coveted spots in a newly formed social football league aren’t just about scoring goals – they’re tied to scholarships, offering educational opportunities and support for girls who show dedication and a positive attitude both on and off the field.

Alvaro Abreu, La Liga’s delegate in Kenya, spearheaded the development of this project in collaboration with local NGO Inter Base League (IBL). Speaking at the launch, Alvaro emphasised La Liga’s dedication to adding value to society and empowering young people through football.

Erick Juma, CEO of IBL, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the transformative potential of football in a community grappling with various challenges. He emphasised the project’s ability to offer girls in Kibera a positive outlook for the future.

In addition to the scholarships, the initiative encompasses a comprehensive sports and education program benefiting over 400 girls. This program integrates football with essential values such as companionship, tolerance, sportsmanship, and respect, aiming to enhance the quality of life and promote community harmony.

Beyond the football pitch, participants will engage in community service activities, including litter picking and educational workshops addressing critical local issues like teenage pregnancy and menstrual hygiene.

The project will also see FUNDACIÓN LALIGA providing training for coaches and scholarships for girls at risk of social exclusion. Additionally, LALIGA’s logistical and organisational support, including the provision of sports equipment, will ensure the smooth operation of the initiative.

With the involvement of LALIGA clubs and the implementation of FUNDACIÓN LALIGA’s “Values to Win ” methodology, this project not only promotes football development but also instils important life values in its participants.

As the project unfolds, it promises to be a catalyst for positive change, inspiring hope and fostering resilience among Kibera’s young girls. Through the combined efforts of La Liga, FUNDACION LALIGA, and IBL, the dream of empowerment becomes a reality for the girls of Kibera.
