STATEMENT ON THE REPREHENSIBLE UTTERANCES BY THE EDUCATION CABINET SECRETARY GEORGE MAGOHA TO A FEMALE JOURNALIST
The Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) has noted with great concern the statements made by the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Education, Prof. George Magoha on 25th July 2022 where he subjected a female journalist from the Nation Media Group to profiling, dishonour, ridicule, and harassment when she attempted to ask a question during a press conference.
Profiling and denigrating the journalist was not only unconstitutional but a direct infringement on the freedom of the press, which is critical to a well-functioning democracy.
As a well-enlightened public figure, the CS is aware that Kenya is made up of diverse ethnicities and is very conversant with the diverse composition of the media fraternity. He should have handled the journalist with simple decorum and civility and his response was not only unacceptable, dishonourable but moreso reprehensible.
This incident demonstrates the systemic intimidation that journalists face in the line of duty, especially during election periods.
The association urges politicians and various office holders to desist from such rhetoric targeted at journalists. We also call for more protection measures for female journalists and demand that the CS issues a public apology to the journalist and the entire Fourth Estate with immediate effect.
