Networking: The Formidable Beast I Conquered
‘Your network is your net worth’, the new catchphrase in town. Well, it’s not so new but in my world I’m hearing it more frequently. As true as the statement is, it’s quite a lot of pressure for someone who doesn’t know how to maneuver this delicate dance called networking.
I’ve been privileged to attend a number of events and meetings the past few months and that’s where my skills have been put to test. First of all, I do not like meeting new people; it makes me uncomfortable. Second, as a healing over-sharer, I do not do well with small talk. And third, fresh in the market with little experience, there’s only so much I can talk about regarding the professional world. But these are just the little lies I tell myself to help forget how terrible I’m doing.
After attending a couple of these work related events and watching my boss; who does it seamlessly if I may add, I’ve picked up a few tricks myself. One does not always sit next to someone you know, you’ll get too comfortable. Two, always talk to the people you are seated next to. Three, always ask a question or give a comment; people will naturally be drawn to you and someone will definitely say hi after. Another thing that really helps, is looking good. When you look good you feel good and it boosts your confidence a little.
Plus an acquaintance of mine, Martin, shared that the same way I’m nervous to meet new people is the same way everyone else is feeling and I think that helps. It was so intimidating at the beginning especially in a room full of people who know each other but now after trying these tricks it’s not so scary anymore. Don’t get me wrong I’m not yet a pro but I will keep learning and step on feet until I finally grasp this waltz.
