Member of the Month – Dr.Jane Wambui Thuo
Our Member of the Month this February is Dr. Jane Wambui Thuo. Dr Jane has expertise and experience in the field of communications, gender and media with additional background in economics. She is the former Executive Director of AMWIK where she worked for the last 9 years. She joined AMWIK in 2004 as a Programmes Officer and rose through the ranks to head AMWIK until December 2013.
Dr. Thuo has 15 years working experience. She served on the national steering committee that developed a National Action Plan on the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325. She is also a member of the Technical Working Group involved in development of the institutional strengthening standards and their indicators for Kenya CSOs under FANIKISHA, an initiative supported by USAID amongst other development partners.
For the last two years, she has been one of the judges in the Annual Media Excellence Awards (AMEA) organized by the Kenya Alliance of Residents Association. She has also made several presentations on the role of media and communication in development and co-authored some books and publications. Previously she worked as a Fundraising and Communications officer with African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF-Kenya), where she successfully coordinated campaign that sought to improve sanitation in the Kibera slum. She has consulted for Noel Creative Media and government/World Bank funded projects. She was an Editor for the Flying Doctor Society of Africa quarterly newsletter. She was also an employee of the Teachers Service Commission for two years as a high school teacher. She holds a Ph.D. from University of Nairobi, a Master of Arts in Communications degree from Daystar University and a B.ED (Arts) from Moi University. Dr. Thuo is a fellow of the 2010 Annenberg-Oxford Summer Institute where she graduated with a certificate in Global Media Policy and New Themes in Media Regulation. She is an Alumnus of the African Women Leadership Institute (AWLI) that builds the capacity of women leaders in Africa.
Dr. Jane lectures at the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Nairobi and at Daystar University in the Communication Department.
