IEBC PARTNERS WITH THE MEDIA IN PREPARATIONS FOR THE 2022 GENERAL ELECTION
The media are essential to democracy, and a democratic election is impossible without media.
These were the sentiments as AMWIK took part in joint deliberations between the electoral governing body, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the Kenya Media Sector Working Group which sought to among other things lay the foundation for cooperation in facilitating free, fair and credible elections.
IEBC vice-chairperson, Juliana Cherera, who chaired the meeting expressed her delight in working with the media to achieve public awareness and understanding of the electoral process.
“Even with the popularity of digital media, the mainstream media platforms still play an important role in influencing political discourse during elections.”

She challenged the team which comprises media regulators and management to facilitate credible and timely access to electoral information, promote professionalism and coordinate national and grassroots media activities and advise the Commission on how to build the media’s capacity.
