Gen Z’s Cry for Justice: A New Era of Activism
In a historic display of activism, thousands of young Kenyans across the country, Gen Z, took to the streets to demand change in their government. This movement, fueled by frustration and a desire for a better future, was more than just a protest; it was an urgent cry for justice.
The youth’s anger was rooted in years of rampant corruption and government mismanagement. As public funds were siphoned away and essential services suffered, their dreams of a prosperous future seemed increasingly out of reach. The recent financial scandal, involving the misappropriation of billions, was the final straw.
The irresponsible management of government funds worsened the frustration. Public money, which should have been used to improve living conditions, instead lined the pockets of the corrupt. Schools remained underfunded, hospitals lacked basic supplies and infrastructure projects stalled, all while the lavish lifestyles of the political elite were paraded on social media. This evident disregard for the welfare of ordinary citizens had driven the youth to the streets, demanding accountability and transparency.
Adding to their grievances was the relentless rise in taxes. The proposed Finance Bill 2024 threatened to increase taxes even further, placing an unbearable burden on already struggling families. A recent graduate unable to find a job, was particularly vocal about this issue. “How can we start our lives when every opportunity is taxed away?” she asked, her voice echoing the sentiments of many young Kenyans. The rising cost of living has made it nearly impossible for them to save, invest or even meet basic needs.
The Finance Bill 2024 became a focal point of the protests. The youth saw it as yet another example of the government’s disconnect from the reality of their lives. They argued that instead of imposing higher taxes, the government should address corruption and ensure that public funds are used effectively. The bill, they insisted, must be rejected and more equitable solutions must be found to address the nation’s financial challenges.
Their protests were driven by a vision of a just and transparent government that works for the people, not against them. “Gen Z’s Stand for Change” was a call to action, a demand for a future where integrity, accountability, transparency and opportunity were the norm.
As they marched through the different counties, their chants and banners conveyed powerful messages: the youth were no longer willing to be silent victims of a broken system. They were ready to fight for their rights and reclaim their future.
As a Gen Z, I stand to be counted in calling for change, transparency and using my voice in the media to champion for change. Even as we mourn the lives lost during the demos, our course as a generation is on the right side of history. Our country will change for the better, that is my hope and prayer.
