AMWIK representatives appointed to AJEA awards judging panel
We are delighted that representatives from AMWIK have been appointed to the judging panel of the Media Council of Kenya(MCK)’s 10th Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA) 2022. Led by Executive Director Judie Kaberia, who is the chairperson of the judging panel, other members are AMWIK’s Vice Chairperson Rachel Ombaka, member Njeri Rugene, Wangethi Mwangi, Emmanuel Juma, Caleb Atemi and Dr Joseph Nyanoti.
The team takes over the final judging phase following a successful nomination stage that sifted through the original 1,240 entries in 18 categories. The seven-member nominating panel comprised of chair Owino Opondo and Dr Rosemary Nyaole, Mwendwa Kiogora, Dr Jared Obuya, Betty Dindi, Eric Shimoli and David Okwembah. Members of both the nominating and the judging panels are veteran journalists and academics.
Speaking at a meeting with both panels, Media Council of Kenya CEO Mr David Omwoyo said, “Your recommendations go a long way in improving the quality of our journalism. Even as you look for the best among the submissions, flag out the gaps you can pick to frame our interventions in capacity building and feedback to media houses”.
On her part, Judie Kaberia explained that the panel sought quality at every level of the story development process, including research, sourcing, packaging, innovation, and how the stories relate to the difficulties that society faces.
In addition, the panel will look at how the stories are aligned with journalism professional ethics, their impact on society and how they called on the government to take necessary action in service delivery.
The winners of the 10th AJEA will be announced and honoured at the AJEA 2022 Gala Dinner on Friday, May 6th, 2022.
